I’ll be honest—I’m not a die-hard follower of the TRON saga (I’m sure I saw the original when I was young, and the 2010 sequel didn’t leave a strong impression). So this review is strictly about TRON: Ares as a stand-alone film. The movie clearly has big production money behind it and some genuinely fun special effects. The formidable preview image of a ship from a parallel universe suspended in the sky set up the hope of edge-of-your-seat spectacle or epic battles. While there are some fun moments, the audience is left wanting more.
The villain is decent enough—he embodies the dark sociopathic energy one might expect—but given his status as the “creator” of the new tech that allows digital programs to enter the physical world, I expected someone smarter and sharper on-screen (think a modern Lex Luthor). Instead, we get a competent antagonist without the full punch of threat or ingenuity. The story doesn’t quite lean into the world’s promise in the way I hoped.
There’s no denying the film’s visual ambition: the blend of digital and real-world environments is frequently striking, and the concept of programs crossing into human space has genuine intrigue (a highlight in many early reactions). However, the narrative weight feels lighter than the visuals promise. For viewers unfamiliar with the franchise, the film works as an okay sci-fi diversion—it looks good, moves at a respectable pace, and keeps things mostly coherent. But for something more memorable? It falls short.
In summary: TRON: Ares is fine. It will fill time moderately well if you don’t have anything better queued up. But if you’re looking for spectacular thrills or a deeply resonant story, you may leave the theatre wishing it had pushed further.
