– Visually Stunning, but Lacking Emotional Spark
Wish is one of those films that feels like it had all the right ingredients, but the final result doesn’t quite live up to the potential. On the surface, it’s beautifully crafted—visually, the movie is a standout. The animation has a soft, storybook-like quality to it that gives the film a timeless feel, and the use of light and color is truly stunning. From an aesthetic standpoint, Wish delivers.
The voice acting is solid across the board. Each character is brought to life with energy and warmth, and the performances help carry the film through some of its slower or less engaging moments. The main theme song is also well done. It’s not iconic in the way some Disney soundtracks are—Tarzan or Aladdin come to mind as high bars—but it’s still memorable and sweet, with a message that fits the tone of the film.
Where Wish falters is in the story and emotional impact. It’s not that the story is bad—it’s just not as strong as it should have been. The themes of hope and dreaming big are there, but they don’t dig deep enough to truly resonate. You keep waiting for that one moment to really hit, and it never quite comes. The message feels a bit surface-level, which is disappointing, especially for a studio known for its ability to blend simplicity with emotional depth. Some of Disney’s best films work on multiple levels, and this one feels a little too singular in its tone and humor.
In the end, Wish is visually beautiful and has its heart in the right place, but it doesn’t leave a lasting impression. It’s sweet and safe, and that’s just fine.
