This was way more fun than I expected. I figured it’d be a throwaway comedy, and instead I got a full action movie that also happens to be really funny. It moves fast, the fights are easy to follow, and nobody’s winking at you to signal how silly it all is. It just commits, and that commitment is exactly why it works.
The reason to watch is Mila Kunis and Kate McKinnon together. They actually feel like best friends. You know how some pairings feel like two actors reading lines at each other? Not here. They riff, they interrupt, they bicker, and it plays like people who’ve known each other forever. Kunis is the grounded one with a perfect deadpan, and she’s the heart of the whole thing. McKinnon is pure chaos in the best way, and somehow it never wears thin.
What surprised me most was how much I cared about them. There’s a scene in a safe house where they just talk about their friendship, no action and no jokes to bail them out, and it lands. That quiet beat gives all the crazy stuff some weight.
Justin Theroux is a nice touch too: a spy who’s charming and also kind of bad at his job. Easy to root for.
Is the plot thin? Sure. The villain is forgettable and you’ll see most of it coming from a mile off. But I didn’t mind. The story is just a frame to hang these two women and their friendship on, and the movie knows it.
If you want something breezy and funny with real heart underneath, this delivers.
