Monkey Man (2024) – Stylish Action, but a Disjointed Story
Monkey Man had the potential to be something special. With a fresh setting, a lead actor committed to the role, and action sequences reminiscent of John Wick, there were plenty of reasons to be excited. But while the execution had its moments, the story itself is where things started to fall apart.
First, the positives—the acting is solid across the board. Dev Patel fully commits, bringing a raw intensity to his role that makes the action feel real and grounded. There’s an authenticity to his performance that helps carry the film, even when the story starts to lose its way. The fight choreography is another highlight. Fans of John Wick will find a handful of well-executed action sequences that deliver the kind of brutal, close-quarters combat that makes this style of action so engaging.
Unfortunately, that’s where the strengths end. The biggest issue is the story, which feels both forced and disjointed. There’s an element of lore and legend introduced early on, and while it could have been a fascinating addition, it never fully integrates into the film’s core. Instead of feeling woven into the DNA of the story, it comes across as something we’re told matters rather than something we feel unfolding naturally.
Another problem is the characters. Not all of them feel relevant, and at times, it seems like they exist purely to push the plot forward rather than serving any meaningful role. This makes parts of the film feel hollow, as if we’re moving from one set piece to the next without a strong emotional throughline to keep us invested.
While Monkey Man has moments of excitement, it never quite comes together in a way that feels satisfying. The strong performances and bursts of great action aren’t enough to overcome a story that feels like it’s missing something.
