I know I might be in the minority here, but I really enjoyed the 2024 version of Mean Girls. I get that a lot of people had strong feelings going into it—especially those who wanted the new film to stick more closely to the original. And while it doesn’t mirror the 2004 version, I think the changes it makes are part of what makes it fun.
The musical approach won’t be for everyone, and I totally get that. But if you’re going to turn a classic into a musical, the bare minimum is that the songs need to be catchy—and these absolutely are. The soundtrack is fun and energetic, and it gives the movie a unique flavor that helps it stand on its own rather than living in the shadow of the original.
Yes, there are a few moments where the themes feel a little more suggestive than what we saw in the 2004 version, but it’s worth remembering that the original was fairly edgy for its time, too. This version just updates that tone for today’s audience—and it doesn’t feel over-the-top or out of place.
What really stood out to me was the acting. The cast does a great job balancing sincerity and comedy. The performances feel fresh, and the blend of serious moments with lighter, comedic ones is really well done. The characters still feel true to the spirit of the original, but with a little more modern energy.
Overall, Mean Girls is a solid watch. It’s not trying to replace the original—it’s offering a different take. If you go in with an open mind and a willingness to enjoy it for what it is, there’s a lot to like here. It’s fun, colorful, and confidently does its own thing.
