Moana 2 is a visually stunning addition to the franchise, but it’s not necessarily worth the trip to the theater. Disney continues to excel with breathtaking animation, and the film’s emphasis on the power and support of our ancestors is a beautiful theme that resonates deeply with me.
That said, I was a little let down in a couple of areas. First, the story feels underdeveloped compared to the original. In Moana, we got a rich backstory for Te Fiti and a clear understanding of Te Ka’s impact on the world—this set the stage for Moana’s adventure. In Moana 2, however, the backstory feels rushed, and critical stakes are glossed over. Moana is told that if she doesn’t find a way to connect with the other people of the world, her own people will cease to exist. But how and why? The film asks the audience to accept this premise without offering enough explanation or context.
Then there’s the music. Disney has a legacy of creating unforgettable songs that elevate their films—think The Circle of Life (The Lion King, 1994), I Won’t Say I’m in Love (Hercules, 1997), or Let It Go (Frozen, 2013). These songs don’t just fit their scenes; they define them. Unfortunately, none of the songs in Moana 2 reach that level. While crafting such iconic music is no small feat, Disney’s track record sets a high bar, and it’s disappointing when a musical doesn’t deliver at least one deeply memorable number. Of course, this is just my take, to each his/her own.
Overall, Moana 2 has its merits, particularly in its visuals and themes, but it falls short in storytelling and music. It’s a decent sequel, but it doesn’t quite capture the magic that made the original so unforgettable.
