Coming right after Infinity War, this movie had a tough job. It needed to sit with all that heavy grief while still being a fun teen adventure, and it pulls off both without feeling forced. There’s a giddy energy running through the whole thing that just makes you smile.
Tom Holland is perfect as Peter Parker. He nails the anxiety of a kid suddenly expected to be the next Iron Man, and and the story does it perfectly. The stuff with Zendaya’s MJ is the highlight. She’s sharp, funny, and way more than a love interest.
Then there’s Mysterio. Jake Gyllenhaal is clearly having a blast, playing the noble hero act with a little sleaze hiding underneath. When the twist hits, it lands, because the movie earned it. This is not your usual forgettable Marvel villain.
Here’s what I loved most. When Mysterio’s crew pulls back the curtain and shows exactly how they build their illusions mid-fight, we get fooled the same way Peter does. A technical explanation becomes a storytelling trick, so you feel just as rattled and off-balance as he is. Um, awesome!!!
The European setting keeps everything fresh, and Jon Watts never lets it bloat. It plays a little safe in the middle, and the elemental monsters are forgettable. Small gripes against how much fun the rest of it is.
If you like Spidey movies, this one’s an easy yes.
