An underwhelming spinoff that fails to recapture the spark of the original.
I’ve long believed in the “30-minute rule”—if a movie doesn’t grab you in the first half hour, it’s probably not going to be for you. That said, there are always exceptions, and I’m open to being proven wrong. Unfortunately, Bird Box Barcelona just didn’t pull me in.
I was a big fan of the original Bird Box. It was tense, emotionally grounded, and offered a fresh twist on the apocalyptic survival genre. So when I heard about Barcelona, I was cautiously optimistic—especially since the idea of a spinoff set in another part of the world had real potential. Sadly, the first 30 minutes didn’t live up to that potential.
From the opening scenes, the atmosphere felt oddly flat. There’s a lot of wandering through ruins, quick flashes of violence, and brooding stares—but none of it lands with the emotional intensity the original had. The mystery of the unseen entities is still there, but without strong characters to anchor it, the tension just fizzles. Sebastián (Mario Casas), the lead, doesn’t give us much to latch onto early on, and the supporting cast feels more like background noise than part of a meaningful story.
I understand Netflix has a reputation for prioritizing quantity over quality, and this film unfortunately leans into that pattern. A spinoff like this deserved more care—especially following a movie that struck such a chord with audiences. I kept hoping the story would pick up, but after 30 minutes, I just wasn’t compelled to stay.
Still, I’m open to hearing from others. If Bird Box Barcelona gets significantly better past the half-hour mark, I’d love to know. Until then, this one goes in the “missed opportunity” pile.
