Wolf Man (2025) 😊

Wolf Man is a solid January entry. Some elements work exceptionally well, while others feel like a bit of a misfire.

You might recognize one of the writers, Leigh Whannell, as the creative force behind the Saw series and Insidious. Both franchises serve as impressive credentials, and here, Whannell takes on double duty as writer and director. That combination often brings a strong sense of vision, and in Wolf Man, it’s no different. One standout example from the trailer is Blake’s (Christopher Abbott) transformation—we don’t just see it; we experience it through his heightened senses, as well as his loss of understanding of his native language. The film repeatedly immerses us in his world, letting us hear and see as he does, and it’s a brilliant touch that elevates the storytelling.

Another highlight is Charlotte, played by Julia Garner. The film takes its time setting things up, and early on, it’s not clear which character will take center stage. But as the story unfolds, Garner absolutely commands the screen, growing stronger with every scene. Beyond the immersive wolf-vision sequences, what truly lingers after the credits roll is Julia’s masterful portrayal of a mother’s bravery, a wife’s love, and the sheer terror of facing the unknown. There’s one moment in particular where all three emotions collide—she stands, silent and unwavering, eye to eye with the beast. No words, just raw intensity. It’s stunning.

Despite these strengths, Wolf Man isn’t without a few hiccups. The film does an excellent job building suspense with the creature’s approach—heavy footsteps, deep breaths, and an ominous presence. However, at times, the wolf man inexplicably goes silent, appearing suddenly within arm’s reach of Charlotte and her daughter, Ginger (Matilda Firth). The inconsistency in how his presence is handled feels like a contradiction that could pull some viewers out of the moment.

Another minor shortcoming is the lack of background on the original Wolf Man lore or how many others might exist in this world. While it’s not crucial to enjoying the film, a bit more context could have enriched the narrative, especially given the attention paid to other details.

That said, neither of these issues should deter you. Wolf Man delivers exactly what the trailer promises—it’s a straightforward, entertaining ride. If you’re intrigued, don’t hesitate to give it a whirl.
