Voicemails for Isabelle is a really cute romcom with a premise that gives it just enough of its own flavor, even if it is not trying to reinvent anything. And honestly, I do not think romcoms always need to break the mold. Sometimes the tried and true works because it is tried and true, and this movie understands that.
The leads have solid chemistry. It may not have that extra sparkle the all-time great romcoms have, but there is still something sweet and easy to like here. The supporting cast also knows exactly what kind of movie they are in. They pop in, move things along, add some fun, and never make the film feel heavier than it needs to be.
What I appreciated most is how lightly the movie balances heartache, love, and comfort. The cooking element gives it a pleasant warmth without taking over the whole thing, and the use of Robyn’s “Dancing On My Own” hit especially well for me.
Netflix has been doing strong work in this space, and this is another reminder that people want romcoms year-round. This one is familiar, cozy, and easy to enjoy, which is exactly what it needed to be.
