Trap (2024) 😀

Trap is a thrilling and welcome addition to M. Night Shyamalan’s catalog. Shyamalan is known for his twists, but here, the entire film is a twist on its very premise. As the trailer reveals, the movie follows Cooper (Josh Hartnett), a serial killer at a concert that’s supposedly a trap designed to ensnare him.

Admittedly, the first half of the movie starts off fun but begins to drag a little. If you’re like me, you might find yourself wondering if the whole film will feel this way. Rest assured, it won’t! The second half delivers in spades, as both the plot and tension thicken—like gravy, they thicken!

Part of the challenge in the first half lies in Josh Hartnett’s portrayal of Cooper’s duality: a loving dad who’s also a serial killer, anxious about being caught. This is no easy feat for even the best actors. Hartnett does a serviceable job, and while his performance doesn’t dazzle initially, he redeems himself in the second half, especially in scenes set in his own home. There’s a subtle, chilling menace about him—especially in the scene where he takes off his shirt. What’s usually a positive, almost cliché moment in a Marvel film feels unnervingly sinister here, reminiscent of Smile’s eerie use of its titular expression.

A true standout in the film is Saleka as Lady Raven. She’s striking, magnetic, and her music is an integral part of the film’s allure. Songs like Care for You, Liar, Save Me, and especially Where Did She Go elevate the atmosphere. While it’s easy to assume her inclusion might be tied to Shyamalan being her father, her on-screen gravitas and sheer talent prove she’s there because she deserves to be.

If you’re even remotely a fan of Shyamalan’s work, Trap is an absolute must-watch. It’s a twisted, tense, and ultimately rewarding film that deserves your attention.
