– A Missed Opportunity for Holiday Action Fun
Silent Night looked like it had all the ingredients for a fun, popcorn action flick—gritty revenge, big set pieces, and that classic holiday edge. But unfortunately, it just didn’t land for me. What could’ve been a fast-paced, over-the-top thrill ride ended up being a slow, slightly frustrating watch that asked a bit too much from the audience in terms of suspended disbelief.
The concept itself has potential, but the way it’s executed leans so far into stylized territory that it loses its footing. There’s a difference between asking the audience to go along for the ride and completely detaching from reality, and this film definitely leans into the latter. The action sequences, which should’ve been the highlight, are hit or miss. Some moments work okay, but most of it feels uninspired, overly choreographed, or just flat-out implausible.
One of the biggest issues is the pacing. The film drags far more than it should. There’s a lot of brooding and buildup, but it doesn’t really pay off. I found myself waiting for it to kick into gear, and when it finally does, it’s more of a stumble than a sprint. It’s also a bit longer than it needs to be—and maybe that’s just because I wasn’t enjoying it by that point—but trimming 20 minutes off wouldn’t have hurt.
I get what the film was going for, and I can appreciate the attempt to do something different with the genre. But different doesn’t always mean better, and in this case, the blend of silence, style, and holiday-themed violence just didn’t come together the way it could have.
In the end, Silent Night isn’t the worst action movie I’ve seen—but it’s definitely not one I’ll be revisiting. It’s more of a missed opportunity than a memorable holiday hit.
