The Protégé is an action-packed thrill ride and a perfect pick for any weekend!
Maggie Q is flawless as the lead. As a big fan of female-led films, I often find that the story doesn’t quite measure up to the talent of the actor. Thankfully, that’s not the case here. With a solid story and an equally solid lead, Maggie Q’s Anna commands the screen. Deadly on an average day, Anna becomes unstoppable when her mentor and father figure, Moody (Samuel L. Jackson), is killed. Fueled by grief and vengeance, she embarks on a relentless hunt to track down the killer and exact justice.
Unfortunately, The Protégé was released during a time when audiences were still cautious about going to theaters, which likely impacted its box-office success. Had it come out today, I suspect it would have been a much bigger hit. The story is so rich with potential that it could have easily turned into a trilogy, exploring Anna and Moody’s relationship in greater depth while delving further into Michael’s (Michael Keaton) criminal network.
Alas, it seems that potential will remain untapped. But as we move out of the COVID era, I’m hopeful that films like this will get the attention and success they deserve.
If you haven’t seen The Protégé, do yourself a favor and give it a watch. It’s absolutely worth your time!
