Finally, a Spider-Man movie that actually feels like it’s about a teenager.
That sounds simple, but it’s the whole reason this one works. Tom Holland doesn’t play Peter Parker like a grown man pretending to be young. He plays him like a real kid: awkward, excited, in over his head, and desperate to prove he belongs with the big leagues.
Skipping the origin story was smart. We all know how the spider bite works by now. Instead we jump straight into Peter juggling high school, homework, and crime-fighting in Queens. That street-level feel is baked in from the first frame. The little home-video opening, where he documents his own everyday heroics, tells you exactly what kind of movie you’re in for.
Michael Keaton is the secret weapon. His Vulture isn’t a cackling cartoon. He’s a blue-collar guy who got squeezed out and decided to do what he thought he had to for his family. You understand him, and that makes him scarier than some guy in a suit shooting lasers.
The humor lands without ever stepping on the real stakes. There’s a great moment where Peter loses his fancy Stark suit and realizes he doesn’t need it: if he’s nothing without it, he shouldn’t have it. That’s his actual growth, not just a cool line you nod at.
Zendaya and Jacob Batalon add a lot too. Ned feels like a genuine best friend, the kind of guy who’d lose his mind if he found out your secret, which is exactly the point.
