– Visually Stunning, Narratively Aimless
The Marvels is one of those films that clearly had the budget, the talent, and the visual polish—but unfortunately, it just doesn’t come together. The visuals are stunning. The color palette, effects, and cinematography are all top-notch, and it’s obvious that a lot of effort went into making the film look fantastic. On a purely visual level, there’s a lot to admire here.
The cast also brings good energy. It seems like the actors were genuinely having fun with their roles, and there’s something enjoyable about watching a cast that’s clearly leaning into the lighter, more playful side of a superhero story. Brie Larson, Iman Vellani, and Teyonah Parris have great chemistry, which is certainly a positive element of the film.
But great visuals and a charismatic cast can only take a movie so far. Where The Marvels stumbles—hard—is in the story. It’s poorly constructed and lacks a clear sense of purpose. One of the most basic narrative principles is “direction, then velocity”—know where you’re going before you rush to get there. This movie seems to do the opposite. It throws characters, action sequences, and set pieces at the screen without ever establishing a clear goal or thematic throughline.
Even as a second installment in the Captain Marvel arc, it’s unclear what this film was meant to accomplish in the broader MCU. It feels more like a filler episode than a meaningful addition to the larger narrative. As a result, nearly everything about this movie feels forgettable—especially disappointing given the caliber of the cast and the potential of the premise.
In the end, The Marvels looks great and tries to be fun, but it never finds its footing. Without a stronger sense of direction or purpose, it’s a flashy but forgettable entry in the MCU.
