Following up No Way Home was always going to be nearly impossible. That film gave us everything a Spider-Man fan could want, so topping it, or even matching it, felt like a losing bet. Somehow this one pulls it off, and I did not expect to say that.
The biggest reason is Peter himself. Watching him evolve across these films has been one of the best things Marvel has done, and here the payoff lands. Huge credit to the writers, because these characters feel genuinely nuanced instead of pieces being shuffled around a plot. Nobody is here to fill a slot.
The pacing is spot on. There are flashbacks, but they never take over. They work as accents, little touches that fill in the picture without slowing anything down. That kind of restraint is rare, and it makes the whole thing feel confident.
The real surprise is the villain mystery. It keeps you guessing the entire way through, and I mean actually guessing. When the reveal lands, it’s incredible. I won’t say a word, just know it earns the buildup.
I was also nervous about Frank Castle showing up. We’ve seen a number of films recently where a character is included for a cameo only instead of actually adding to the story. Here, he fits right in, and his back-and-forth with Spider-Man is a highlight. It works far better than I braced for.
On top of that, the Easter eggs for what’s coming have me excited about Marvel again, which hasn’t happened in a while.
Spider-Man is alive and well, and I can’t wait to see where this goes next. This is essential viewing, full stop.
