Ugh, Sony, what happened??!! Let’s not mince words: Madame Web is mediocre at best. For a quick review, it’s disappointing. Let’s unpack why.
First, Sony has proven they can deliver incredible Spider-Man content. The Spider-Man PlayStation games are masterpieces of both action and storytelling. The Spider-Man films starring Tom Holland and the Spider-Man: Into/Across the Spider-Verse animated films are phenomenal. Even standalone movies like Venom (the first and third installments … number 2 wasn’t great) have been hits. So, what went wrong with Madame Web?
Here’s where things fell apart. The trailer heavily featured three major Spider-Women characters, leading audiences to expect epic storylines and action sequences involving them. Instead, their total screen time in the actual film amounts to what we already saw in the trailer. People went in the theater hoping to see these characters suit up and shine—and were left sorely disappointed.
That said, Dakota Johnson does her best as the titular character. Even with weak writing, she carries what little works in the film on her shoulders. Her performance is commendable, but it’s not enough to salvage a story that feels underdeveloped and oversold.
Sony, it’s time to make a decision. Either invest the effort to do justice to these offshoot films, or let go of the Spider-Man rights and let Disney build the universe these characters deserve. Fans are eager for something amazing—please, stop wasting our time.
