A Chilly Sequel That Falls Short
Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire had all the ingredients to be a great follow-up to Afterlife, but unfortunately, it never quite gets there. The trailers promised something bigger, something darkerājust enough to elevate the stakes while keeping it fun for all ages. Instead, what we got was a serviceable sequel that plays it safe, never fully capitalizing on its potential.
The cameos? Great. Seeing familiar faces again is always a treat, and the film does a decent job integrating them. But cameos alone canāt hold up a story, and thatās where Frozen Empire struggles. The narrative just isnāt all that compelling. It follows the Ghostbusters formula well enoughāsome humor, some ghostly chaos, and a climactic showdownābut it never really hooks you. In short, it’s forgettable.
The acting is solid across the board, and the jokes are exactly what youād expect, albeit formulaic. There are a few laughs, but nothing that truly stands out. More importantly, the film never quite delivers on the tone the trailers suggested. It hinted at a darker, more intense ghost storyānot horror, but something with a little more edge. That never materializes. The movie plays it safe, keeping things light and breezy. It makes for a run-of-the-mill, family-friendly blockbusterāone that leaves the audience wishing for just a little more.
The biggest letdown comes in comparison to its predecessor, Afterlife. It doesnāt have the heart, humor, or nostalgia-driven magic that Afterlife captured so well.
Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire isnāt a bad movieāitās just an okay one. If youāre a die-hard fan, youāll probably enjoy it for what it is. But if you were hoping for something that builds on Afterlife in a meaningful way, you might walk away disappointed.
