I went in with low expectations. The user ratings were middling, but the trailer made it look like a cousin to Happy Gilmore, which is a ball of fun. Good news: it lands in the same neighborhood.
What makes it work is that everyone on screen is clearly having a blast. Nobody’s coasting. Every actor digs into the little corners of their character, and the supporting cast pulls its weight instead of just filling space around the leads. And the heart of it is Dusty and PJ.
PJ steals the movie by taking everything completely literally. “Where’s the device?” had me on the floor. Simple joke, but the timing and commitment sell it. Then there’s the scene where Dusty spots the cookie jar Candace made as one of her hobby projects, and the movie just holds on it. This is impressive because dialogue is everything in a film, so the choice to have the characters talk about it as long as they did turn the moment into comedy gold. I now believe we should all have a “diet cookie jar.”
That’s the trick here. The writers weren’t afraid to let a moment breathe, even when it had nothing to do with the plot. They keep zooming in on random, pointless little details, and somehow that’s exactly what makes it funny. The pacing holds up, the direction knows when to sit still, and the whole thing feels loose in the best way.
If you want something silly and genuinely funny, put this on your watchlist. You’ll have a blast.
