The Love Hypothesis is an adorable romcom, and it wins you over fast. Most of that is Olive. She’s beautifully written: the girl next door, warm without ever trying too hard, and you fall for her right along with the movie. With a lead this easy to root for, everything around her gets to have fun.
And it does. Dr. Carlsen is the perfect wall for Olive to bounce off. He’s serious, dry, brilliant, and he accepts nothing short of perfection. Characters like that often flatten into cardboard grumps, but he’s played with real care. His conversations with Olive drive the whole movie. They’re sharp, quick, and impossible to tune out. The chemistry is the real thing, and you feel it in every exchange.
The biggest surprise for me was Anh, Olive’s best friend. She knocks it out of the park. She’s fierce, loyal, and the family Olive never had. Their bond gives the movie a second heartbeat beyond the romance. I expected a sidekick. I left thinking about her almost as much as the leads.
Start to finish, it’s just fun. The pacing never drags, and the writing is smart without showing off. It knows exactly what it wants to be and commits all the way.
Want something cozy for the couch this weekend? Look no further. This one’s a keeper.
