This…was…exactly what I needed. Now, let me start by saying this film isn’t for everyone. While it ultimately ends on a hopeful note, that hope comes from letting go of a loved one—not rekindling a romance or finding new love.

I know that might not sound like a must-watch, but trust me, it is. At the heart of Someone Great is Jenny’s (Gina Rodriguez) struggle to process a recent breakup, and the depth of her heartbreak struck me profoundly. Just weeks before watching this, my wife of 17 years asked for a divorce. Watching Jenny refuse to accept the breakup and cling to hope felt so raw, so real—like having a conversation with someone who truly understood me. Her pain mirrored my own, and as she confronted hers, I found myself confronting mine.

Then came the moment that changed everything for me: Jenny writes a letter to Nate (LaKeith Stanfield). That scene—her words, her tears, her quiet resolve, the music, and the choice to have her pour her feelings into a letter—was perfection. It hit me in a way I can’t fully put into words. Watching her process and eventually let go gave me permission to do the same. The contents of that letter? They cut me to the core, enunciating exactly what I felt. So beautiful. So powerful.
