The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim is quite the mouthful of a title, but it’s a fitting addition to the LotR universe. This animated installment marks a departure from the live-action films many fans know and love, but it’s not the first time LotR has ventured into animation. Longtime fans might recall The Lord of the Rings (1978) and The Hobbit (1977), both animated classics from an earlier era. For those of us who grew up with those films, this feels like a nostalgic callback while offering something fresh.
The film’s world feels familiar in all the best ways. From the stirring music to iconic locations like The Great Hall and Helm’s Deep (known here as the stronghold of the Hornburg), the attention to detail immerses you back into Middle-earth. And for the die-hard fans, there are plenty of Easter eggs to discover—none of which I’ll spoil here!
The action is a standout highlight. The live-action films set a high bar with their tense, harrowing battle scenes, and I’m thrilled to say this film lives up to that legacy. Despite being animated, the fight sequences are gripping and had me on the edge of my seat. And Helm Hammerhand—what a presence! From the trailer, we know he’s capable of taking a man down with a single blow, but the film delivers so much more depth and greatness to his character. I won’t spoil the details, but his story is one of the film’s greatest strengths.
That said, the animation style may be divisive. Some viewers might struggle with the look and feel of it, but if you’re open to the medium and have a love for LotR, this is a must-watch. It’s a worthy addition to the Middle-earth saga, paying homage to its roots while bringing something new to the table.
