The Expendables 2 is bigger, funnier and comfortable being exactly what it is: a bunch of action legends blowing stuff up and having a great time doing it.
The plot is simple. Barney Ross and his crew chase a mystery item, a nasty arms dealer gets in the way, and things turn personal fast. Thin? Sure. Does it matter? Not really. The story’s only job is to get you from one huge shootout to the next, and it does that job just fine.
Stallone holds it all together. He plays Barney with a tired, gravelly warmth that makes the team feel like real friends, not a pile of famous names. Statham is cool and quick with a joke. Jet Li gets one lightning-fast fight early on, and I wanted more.
Then Van Damme shows up and steals the movie. His villain is literally named Vilain, and he plays him with a strutting, almost self-mocking swagger. He knows how many times he’s stood across from a hero, and he savors every second of it. When he finally squares off with Stallone, it feels like two eras of action cinema settling a score.
Simon West keeps the action easy to follow. He favors wide shots, so you can actually see who’s hitting who. The kills get creative. Some effects look cheap and the cameos land hot and silly, but that’s part of the fun.
If you grew up on 80s action movies, this is a reunion party with a body count. Grab popcorn, round up your friends and don’t overthink it. The old guys still have it.
