– Loud, Flashy, and Forgettable
I went into Expend4bles knowing exactly what kind of movie it was trying to be—an over-the-top, guns-blazing, no-apologies action flick in the spirit of its predecessors. And while I’m all for popcorn action when it’s done right, this one just didn’t land for me.
Franchises like The Expendables have a clear blueprint: bring together big personalities, toss in some cheesy one-liners, and blow everything up. Think Fast & Furious—another series that thrives on outrageous stunts and formulaic storytelling. And while those movies are far from perfect, they at least seem to know how to tap into the audience’s need for a thrill ride. Expend4bles, on the other hand, feels like it’s trying to chase that same magic without really understanding what makes it work.
The story this time around feels especially forced. The stakes aren’t compelling, the dialogue is flat, and even the action—usually the saving grace in movies like this—feels more like a checklist than anything exciting or new. It’s not that I expected realism, but there’s a certain threshold for how much disbelief an audience is willing to suspend. This one goes way past that line. Not in a fun, absurd way—just in a way that feels lazy and excessive.
That said, the cast does what they can. Jason Statham brings his usual grit, and there are moments where you can tell the film wants to be fun. But it never quite gets there. The pacing lags, the tone wobbles, and by the end, it’s hard to care much about what’s happening on screen.
Expend4bles isn’t the worst movie out there, but it’s certainly not a worthy entry in a franchise that’s already skating on thin narrative ice. If you’re craving big action, there are better ways to spend your time.
