The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014) 😊

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 has a permanent soft spot in my heart, and I can name exactly why: Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone. When they share the screen, everything clicks. The banter sounds natural, the arguments feel real, and you can tell they genuinely enjoy each other. I’d happily watch a whole movie of Peter and Gwen just hanging out.

Garfield is a great Spider-Man. He’s quick with a joke in the suit, but he never hides how much Peter is carrying, especially the promise he made to Gwen’s dad. Stone gives Gwen brains and backbone, so she’s never just the girlfriend waiting to be rescued. Director Marc Webb knows how to film two people falling for each other.

Unfortunately the movie is so busy setting up future villains that it forgets to finish the ones it has. Jamie Foxx is having fun as Electro, but Max goes from lonely guy to supervillain way too fast. Dane DeHaan is a smart pick for Harry Osborn, yet the story rushes him along before he can breathe. Rhino mostly exists to remind you that sequels were planned. It’s long, too, and the jumps between goofy jokes and heavy drama can jolt. Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 2 kept its focus tight. This one feels crowded.

Still, it’s fun and full of heart. It won’t top my Spider-Man rankings, but when I’m in the mood for Garfield and Stone, it’s a good reason to put it on.

Come for the villains and you’ll leave frustrated. Come for Peter and Gwen and you’ll have a great time.
