Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (2024) 😊

I’ve seen plenty of family movies with my kids, and Sonic the Hedgehog 3 was … okay. Since Shrek, many family films have aimed to entertain both kids and adults. Sonic 3 makes an attempt but doesn’t fully follow through for the grown-ups. To hit a home run with adults, a movie needs to either be outright funny (Shrek with its one-liners) or tell a story that pierces through to the bedrock of one’s inner child (Inside Out). This film doesn’t quite do either.

That said, some things work really well. Keanu Reeves voicing Shadow is one of them. His iconic John Wick tone brings a gravitas we just can’t get enough of. It’s a brilliant casting choice.

And then there’s Jim Carrey. He’s fantastic as both Dr. Robotnik and Gerald Robotnik. The dance scene? Pure gold. Silly dance moments can easily veer into cringe territory, but Carrey’s absolute commitment turns it into a riot. That same unshakable dedication is what made Dumb and Dumber work so well for him and Jeff Daniels—he knows how to sell silliness like no one else.

If you’ve seen the trailer and are intrigued, it’s worth a watch. Just keep in mind that the film doesn’t go much deeper than what the trailer promises. It’s fun, but maybe best saved for when you’re in between better options.
