– A Heartfelt Tribute That Misses the Mark
It’s clear from the start that My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 was a passion project—intended as a heartfelt tribute to Michael Constantine, who played the beloved patriarch, Gus. Unfortunately, while the intention is admirable, the execution just doesn’t quite land. What should have been a touching continuation of a beloved franchise ends up feeling disjointed and, at times, awkward.
The film tries to capture the same chaotic family charm that made the original a hit, but this third installment struggles to find its footing. The story lacks cohesion—it jumps from moment to moment without a strong throughline, and that emotional connection that the audience is meant to feel often gets lost along the way.
There are flashes of the humor and warmth we’ve come to expect from the Portokalos family, but they’re buried beneath uneven pacing and overly cheesy moments that feel more sitcom than cinematic. The trip to Greece, which could’ve been a beautiful backdrop for growth and reflection, is mostly reduced to shallow setups and cultural clichés rather than meaningful exploration.
One character that really stood out—in the wrong way—was Victory. Her inclusion in the story felt forced and at times jarring. She wasn’t well integrated into the overall arc and ended up feeling more like a distraction than an asset to the film. It’s not that new characters can’t work in sequels—it’s just that they need to feel like a natural extension of the story, and that’s not the case here.
That said, there’s still heart in this film. You can sense the love for the cast, the fans, and for Gus himself. But love alone doesn’t make for a great movie. My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 might work for longtime fans seeking nostalgia, but for most viewers, it falls short of being the warm, funny, and touching family story it wanted to be.
