Let me get this out of the way: this is a mess. A big, gorgeous, glorious mess.
The story goes everywhere. A young woman cleaning toilets in Chicago finds out she’s basically the reincarnated queen of an alien empire, and from there it’s space royalty, assassination attempts, alien bureaucracy, and endless shouting about who owns Earth. The middle drags. I won’t pretend it doesn’t.
But here’s the thing: the Wachowskis refused to play it safe. Every frame is packed with something to look at. The space stations, the alien designs, the costumes: it’s the kind of world-building that makes you hit pause just to stare. And then there’s the bees. A swarm of them bows to Jupiter because they can sense she’s royalty at a genetic level. It’s ridiculous. It’s also exactly the kind of committed, no-apologies weirdness that makes the whole thing so fun.
Channing Tatum surprised me. His Caine could have been a dull soldier type, but he’s got a vulnerable, deadpan charm that makes you root for him. Mila Kunis keeps it all grounded, no small feat with this much chaos flying around. And Eddie Redmayne whispers and screams his way through the villain role like he wandered in from a completely different, delightfully unhinged movie. I couldn’t get enough of him.
This is a space opera with real heart underneath. If you can roll with the weirdness, you’re going to have a blast.
