Critics hated Insurgent. I don’t care. I had a great time with it.
The story picks up right where the first film left off. Tris and Four are on the run, Chicago is falling apart, and Jeanine Matthews wants them found. She’s after a mysterious box left behind by the city’s founders, and only a Divergent can open it. Everyone is picking sides. Nobody knows who to trust.
Shailene Woodley is excellent. Tris has chopped her hair, she’s furious, and she’s drowning in guilt over what happened last time. I love that the movie lets her be a mess. She makes bad calls, lashes out, and keeps going anyway. That makes her far more interesting than a hero who always gets it right.
Kate Winslet plays Jeanine ice cold. She never raises her voice, and that’s exactly what makes her scary. Miles Teller is a blast as Peter, the guy you love to hate. Octavia Spencer barely gets any screen time but makes every second count.
The action is a big step up. The chases are fast and easy to follow, and the camera stays close enough that you feel every hit.
The simulations are what really got me. In the first film, the mind games were about facing your fears. Here, the toughest opponent in Tris’s head is Tris herself. That one shift shows how far she’s come.
It isn’t perfect. Some stretches feel rushed, and the dialogue gets clunky. I barely noticed. I was having too much fun.
If you liked the first one, ignore the reviews. This sequel makes Tris fight her toughest enemy, and it’s a better movie for it.
