A remake that may not reinvent the story—but still soars thanks to its heart.
I’ve grown a little skeptical of live-action remakes. Most of them feel like polished copies of something that didn’t need updating to begin with. So I went into the 2025 How to Train Your Dragon with low expectations—but I have to admit, I was genuinely impressed.
Is it new? Not really. This remake follows the original story closely, with only a few tweaks here and there. But unlike some of the other live-action efforts we’ve seen lately, this one works. Why? Because the original How to Train Your Dragon still holds up as a rich, deeply human story—one about empathy, courage, and redefining what strength really means. Those themes resonate just as powerfully today, and seeing them come to life in this format gave the story a new kind of weight.
The casting is excellent. Hiccup’s awkward charm and quiet determination are intact, and Toothless, brought to life with beautifully rendered CGI, still steals the show without saying a word. The chemistry between Hiccup and Astrid works just as well in this version, and Stoick’s inner conflict—wanting to protect his son while pushing him to be someone he’s not—adds a grounded emotional layer that’s hard to miss.
Visually, the film is stunning. Berk is alive with detail, and the flight sequences are everything you’d hope for—soaring, sweeping, and exhilarating. The dragon training scenes still bring a sense of discovery, and the bond between Hiccup and Toothless remains the beating heart of it all.
If you’re looking for something brand new, this probably won’t do it for you. But if you loved the original and want to see it brought to life in a new format—with care, heart, and a bit more realism—then this remake is absolutely worth the watch.
