– Light, Silly, and Easily Forgotten
Genie is one of those movies that’s perfectly fine for what it is—a light, silly comedy that doesn’t try too hard and gives you a few laughs along the way. It’s not going to make any year-end “best of” lists, but if you’re looking for a filler movie on a quiet evening, it’ll do the trick.
Melissa McCarthy is, as always, a treat. She brings her usual over-the-top charm, but in just the right doses. She plays the role with a whimsical energy that works well in this kind of story. You can tell she’s having fun with it, and her comedic timing is spot-on in the moments that lean into absurdity.
One of the fun twists here is that the main character gets unlimited wishes which opens the door to a whole bunch of ridiculous—and at times, disastrous—scenario. The endless options create more room for chaos and unexpected outcomes, which gives the film its best moments.
That said, while there are a handful of funny scenes and sweet moments sprinkled throughout, the movie as a whole is fairly forgettable. The emotional beats don’t land quite as strongly as they’re intended to, and once the credits roll, it’s hard to recall much that really stood out. It’s not bad by any means—it just never quite finds that extra gear to elevate it into something memorable.
In the end, Genie is harmless fun. It doesn’t ask much of you as a viewer, and sometimes, that’s exactly what you need. But if you’re hoping for something clever or fresh, this probably isn’t it. Still, Melissa McCarthy fans will enjoy seeing her in her element.
