– Light Action, Light Comedy, and a Forgettable Ride
Freelance is one of those movies that’s perfectly serviceable for a night when you just want something easy to throw on—but it’s not one you need to rush out to see. It’s got a little bit of everything: some comic relief, a few fun action sequences, and decent chemistry between the leads. But when you add it all up, it never quite becomes more than the sum of its parts.
The story follows a familiar action-comedy formula: an unlikely team thrown into chaos, dodging bullets and bantering along the way. It’s not badly executed, but it doesn’t do much to stand out either. You’ve seen versions of this story before, and Freelance doesn’t add anything particularly new or memorable to the formula.
The chemistry between the two leads is probably the biggest highlight. Their dynamic is playful and has potential, but you can’t help but wish the film leaned into it a little more. It’s there in glimpses, but it never fully becomes the central thread of the story—and had it been, the movie might have left a stronger impression.
The acting is fine across the board—nobody is phoning it in, but there’s not a lot of material for the cast to really sink their teeth into either. The same goes for the action. It’s energetic enough to keep things moving, and there are a few entertaining set pieces, but none of them stand out once the credits roll.
One nice touch is the lighter tone throughout. The movie doesn’t take itself too seriously, and that makes it easier to forgive some of the thinner story beats. It knows it’s not trying to be a high-stakes thriller, and that sense of self-awareness helps a little.
In the end, Freelance is good enough as a time filler. It’s fun in the moment, but pretty forgettable once it’s over.
