Despicable Me (2010) 😀

Despicable Me is an incredibly well-crafted franchise that appeals to all ages, and this first film serves as a brilliant introduction to its brilliantly designed lead character—Gru, voiced by the incomparable Steve Carell. Honestly, Steve Carell is a once-in-a-lifetime gift to mankind, so it’s only fitting that Gru has become such a beloved figure.

Right from the start, the film does an amazing job of introducing us to Gru. Imagine if Michael Jackson’s Smooth Criminal was reimagined as a kid-friendly character—suave, polished, and yet hilariously over-the-top. That’s Gru in a nutshell. And let’s talk about his car! The sheer amount of exhaust it spits out is a perfect visual for his entire personality—”I’m here, you deal with it.” It’s one of the best portrayals of confidence (and chaos) I’ve ever seen.

Two moments in particular stand out as absolute gems. First, there’s the scene where Gru encounters a distraught little boy whose ice cream has tragically fallen to the ground. Gru, ever the problem-solver, hands him a balloon animal—only to pop it moments later and walk away chuckling. I died laughing!

The second highlight? His encounter with his neighbor, whose dog has been leaving “bombs” all over Gru’s yard. Anyone with an inconsiderate neighbor who says “dogs will be dogs” will relate to this one. Gru’s deadpan response? “Unless they’re dead…I’m joking, although it is true.” It’s so over-the-top yet perfectly relatable for anyone dealing with, well, those kinds of neighbors.

While Gru steals the show, it’s important to note that every single voice actor steps up and knocks it out of the park. The film is funny, cleverly written, and full of heart. If you haven’t seen it yet, you’re seriously missing out on a modern classic and a true cultural icon.
