A Decent but Uneven Entry
Captain America: Brave New World marks a major shift for the franchise, as Sam Wilson officially steps into the role of Cap. While this is one of the stronger MCU films we’ve had in the last few years, it still doesn’t live up to the Captain America installments that came before it.
The biggest issue? The story. It’s not particularly rich or intricately woven—it feels more like the filmmakers identified the core elements, pieced them together, and called it a day before crafting something truly cohesive. There’s action, there’s tension, but there’s not enough depth to make the film stick.
Then there are the inconsistencies. One of the most glaring is Sam’s sudden financial upgrade. In Falcon and the Winter Soldier, we see him struggling to make ends meet—his family’s business is failing, and even as an Avenger, he can’t get a bank loan. Now, in Brave New World, he has expensive cars and his own lair? Where did this money come from? The film doesn’t seem to explain it, and it’s a jarring shift.
Another issue is the action. Sam didn’t take the super soldier serum, which means some of the toe-to-toe fights in this movie feel less than believable. While his fighting skills and tech are impressive, there are moments where it’s hard to buy into him going up against certain enemies and walking away unscathed.
That said, the film does have its strong points. Anthony Mackie brings charisma and depth to the role, and seeing him fully step into Cap’s boots is exciting. And there are definitely scenes where the action is well-executed. While the story has its flaws, it’s still a step up from some of the more recent MCU misfires.
Overall, Brave New World is a decent entry into the Captain America franchise. It’s not bad, but it also doesn’t reach the heights of its predecessors. It’s solid, but not spectacular.
