Lily’s story is at the heart of the film, and her emotional struggle with her father is deeply painful to watch. He’s manipulative, emotionally absent, and constantly puts his own needs above hers. While I understand the need to portray him as toxic, the intensity with which the movie paints him starts to feel almost too extreme. Maybe there are fathers that awful in real life—but for many viewers, it might feel a bit exaggerated, making it harder to fully relate.
The real heart of the film, though, is Lily’s relationship with the other Bob Trevino—a man she meets online who shares the same name as her father. Their relationship starts as a strange coincidence but gradually blossoms into something much more meaningful. Bob has a great deal of unresolved grief from losing his own child, and Lily is aches for a father figure. Their bond grows gently and authentically, and those scenes between them are some of the film’s best. They’re filled with emotional honesty and a sense of hope that’s incredibly touching.
One part that didn’t sit quite right was the ending. It’s hard to believe that Bob could open up so fully to his wife about Lily and everything he was feeling, yet never call her back when he was dying. It left the resolution feeling a bit off, emotionally speaking.
Still, Bob Trevino Likes It is a moving film about found family, healing, and the power of unexpected human connection. If the trailer speaks to you, it’s absolutely worth the watch.
