A Spy Thriller That Misses the Mark
Going into Argylle, I was expecting something in the same vein as Kingsman—stylish action, sharp humor, and over-the-top spy antics. And while it does have some of that vibe, it’s nowhere near as polished. Instead of feeling like a sleek, well-crafted spy film, it ends up being a messy, uneven ride with a few entertaining moments but nothing that truly stands out.
The acting across the board is just okay. There’s nothing terrible, but there’s nothing particularly memorable either. The biggest issue, though, is how misleading the marketing was. The trailers set up Henry Cavill as if he’d be a major player, but his screen time is minimal at best. If you were excited to see him lead the film, prepare to be disappointed.
And then there’s the big twist. The reveal that Elly is the real agent? Not even close to believable. The film tries to sell it as a jaw-dropping moment, but it just doesn’t land. Instead, it feels forced, like the movie is trying to be clever without actually earning it. A good twist should feel surprising and make sense in hindsight—this one just feels random.
If there’s one saving grace, it’s Aiden. He’s easily the best part of the movie, bringing in the kind of charisma and energy that the rest of the film struggles to match. Without him, Argylle would have been even harder to sit through.
In the end, Argylle is mediocre at best. It has moments of fun, but it never reaches the level of excitement or charm that it clearly wants to have. If you’re looking for a great spy flick, there are far better options out there.
