A Complete Unknown (2024) 🤩

I’m not entirely sure what I just watched—and, in this case, that’s the highest of compliments. A Complete Unknown defies comparison. It feels like the writers asked themselves, “Who is Bob Dylan?” and instead of settling for a simple biography, they embraced the fact that Dylan is undefinable and crafted a film that brilliantly captures his elusive essence. They absolutely nailed it.

The casting is impeccable. Edward Norton’s portrayal of Pete Seeger radiates pastoral warmth, embodying his message of love, patriotism, and kindness. Elle Fanning as Sylvie Russo delivers what I believe is her best performance yet. Her red hair, her unwavering love of Bob, and her poignant struggle to match his power over her create a dynamic that is both heartbreaking and illuminating. Sylvie may be the ultimate testament to Dylan’s fleeting, intangible connections—a man who never truly belonged to anyone or anything.

Monica Barbaro’s Joan Baez is unforgettable. She is both breathtakingly beautiful and strikingly plain, much like her music, which cuts straight to the core. And then there’s Timothée Chalamet as Bob Dylan—what can I say? His performance is nothing short of transformative. If there’s any justice, this role will earn him an Oscar, and the film deserves Best Picture.

Even if you’re not deeply into folk music, don’t let that stop you. This movie isn’t about folk music—it’s about Bob Dylan, the man, the myth, and the enigma. The music, much like Dylan himself, will move you, just as it moved a generation.
