This. Was. Perfect.
Though early in their careers, Florence Pugh and Andrew Garfield bring audiences into the very heart of love’s complexities. Under John Crowley’s direction and Nick Payne’s storytelling, We Live in Time unfolds as a masterpiece rich with raw, unfiltered human emotion—so genuine it could easily set the gold standard in movie-making.
The film could have stopped there and still been remarkable. But it goes further, following Almut (Pugh) as she confronts the (nearly) impossible: thriving in the face of a devastating illness. As a mother, a partner, and a top-tier professional, she refuses to bow out quietly and fights to the end.
Here, I can’t help but recall Rocky’s words to his son in Rocky Balboa: ‘Let me tell you something you already know. The world ain’t all sunshine and rainbows… I don’t care how tough you are it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it. You, me, or nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. But it ain’t about how hard ya hit. It’s about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward… That’s how winning is done!’ If a character were forged purely from this sentiment, Almut would be the result.
Movies like this are a tribute to the best of humanity: our ability to love, to persevere, and to find a way to thrive.
