Violent Night has quickly become one of my go-to Christmas movies. It’s Die Hard meets Home Alone while keeping the R-rating—something the world didn’t ask for but absolutely needed!
The premise is delightfully absurd: Santa (David Harbour) is a bit disillusioned with Christmas, as we see in a hilarious scene where he vents to a bartender on Christmas Eve. Later that night, he finds himself at the home of a horrible, naughty-list family held hostage by criminals. To make matters worse, his magic that allows him to travel up the chimney to his reindeer begins to malfunction leaving him stuck.
But even Santa has his limits, and on this particular night, the criminals chose the wrong jolly old man to mess with. In a John Wick-esque series of events, Santa dishes out justice in the most festive ways possible—whether it’s with a candy cane or a grenade. David Harbour’s performance is a perfect balance of gritty action and holiday spirit.
To put it another way: if you love syrup on French toast, it’s already fantastic. But melt butter and syrup together—now it’s over the top and downright incredible. That’s what this movie is: over the top in the best way, and it works perfectly.
If you’ve already watched Die Hard this holiday season and are looking for something equally action-packed and fun, Violent Night is your answer. It’s an instant Christmas classic.
