The Ring (2002) 😊

The Ring is a creepy good time, and it’s easy to see why it became such a big deal in 2002. This is a horror that haunts you: more interested in getting under your skin than jolting you every five minutes.

The setup is simple, and it works. Rachel, a journalist, starts digging into a cursed videotape after her niece dies exactly one week after watching it. Then Rachel watches it herself, and the clock starts ticking. From there it plays like a detective story, and we piece the clues together right alongside her.

The look does much of the heavy lifting. Everything is gray, green, and soaked in rain, so even an ordinary kitchen feels slightly wrong. The tape itself is still disturbing, a string of glitchy, random images that linger long after the credits. You’ll never look at a well the same way again.

Naomi Watts holds it all together. Her Rachel is a tired, stubborn single mom whose fear grows as things turn personal, and I believed her the whole way. David Dorfman, as her son Aidan, is unsettling in the quietest way. Brian Cox gets one scene, and it’s hard to shake.

The middle is where it sags. There’s a lot of driving around and digging through records, and the backstory gets murky by the end. It’s more creepy than truly terrifying.

Still, it’s a good spooky pick for a dark night in. I don’t think about it often, but I always have fun when I put it on. If you prefer slow dread to cheap shocks, press play. Just keep an eye on the calendar.
