Step Up 2: The Streets (2008) 😀

Step Up 2: The Streets is a high-energy sequel that knows exactly what it is. I went in expecting little, and it won me over fast. It’s even a better ride than the first Step Up, mostly because it trades drama for dancing.

Briana Evigan plays Andie, a Baltimore street dancer shipped off to a fancy arts school after one too many run-ins with trouble. She doesn’t fit in there, and her old crew won’t take her back. So she teams up with Chase (Robert Hoffman) to build a new crew out of the school’s oddballs and outsiders.

Evigan is the real deal. She’s tough and confident, and once she starts moving, you can’t look anywhere else. Hoffman is likable and lets his dancing do most of the talking.

The scene-stealer is Adam Sevani as Moose. He’s goofy, a little awkward, and pure joy every second he’s on screen. The first time he cuts loose, I couldn’t stop grinning. He’s the reason this crew feels like real friends, not just dancers who happen to share a room.

Jon M. Chu knows how to film dance. He keeps the camera back so you see the whole body move instead of chopping every step into quick cuts. The battles play like big games, with the crowd packed in tight and yelling around the dancers. And the final showdown in the pouring rain is an absolute blast.

The story? Predictable. You can guess most of it from the poster, and some of the lines are pure cheese. The talky stretches between numbers drag a bit, too.

None of that really matters. Nobody shows up here for the plot, and the movie knows it. If you want a feel-good night with great dancing and plenty of heart, this one delivers.
