I was never a Trekky. This one had me in five minutes anyway.
The opening is the whole reason it works. A ship under attack, a father making a choice nobody should have to make, a baby born while the world comes apart around him. That’s a huge emotional swing before you’ve even met the guy the movie is about, and it lands. So when we jump ahead and watch a kid drive a car off a cliff for no reason, you already know exactly who he is.
Chris Pine deserves real credit. Kirk could have been an insufferable golden boy who’s right about everything. Pine plays him as a guy picking fights because he has nowhere else to put the energy. In the bar scene, Pike calls him out and dares him to be more than a brawler, and it quietly reframes everything before it. He isn’t stupid. He’s just aimed at nothing.
Zachary Quinto is the other half. Spock holding the line with logic while something ugly churns underneath is hard to play, and Quinto never tips into showing off.
Karl Urban steals it outright. When he barks “I’m a doctor, not a brawler!” it isn’t a wink at the audience. It sounds like a thing Bones would say on a bad day.
The villain is where it sags. Nero turns up furious and stays furious – not a lot of dimension here, but it works well enough. Everything else moves well by being loud, and funny.
A Trek skeptic walked out grinning. You don’t need the history, just the first ten minutes.
