Ready or Not (2019) πŸ˜€

Ready or Not is so much fun! I expected a cheap gimmick. I walked out grinning.

The setup is simple and kind of brilliant. Grace marries into the Le Domas family, who got filthy rich selling board games. On her wedding night, she has to join them for a midnight game. She draws hide-and-seek. Bad luck. In this house, the seekers carry crossbows.

Samara Weaving makes it all work. Grace is scared, hurt and absolutely furious. She grew up in foster care with no one to lean on, so saving herself is nothing new, and you believe she can last the night. She also swears like a sailor, and it lands every time.

My favorite touch is the wedding dress. It starts spotless, then gets ripped, muddied and soaked in blood. By the end, she’s hacked it short and wears it like armor. You can track her whole arc from bride to survivor just by watching that dress.

The family is a delight. Andie MacDowell and Henry Czerny play the parents with icy smiles, and Aunt Helene is pure nightmare fuel. Adam Brody’s Alex is stuck in the middle, which gives the mayhem a little heart.

It isn’t flawless. A few relatives are more cartoon than person, the gore gets heavy, and the last stretch goes full chaos. Still, it’s fantastic!

It’s mean, fast and genuinely funny, and the ending is a total blast. Grab a friend who can handle some blood, and play along.
