Predator: Badlands was a welcome surprise. Going in, I had my concerns—mainly the PG-13 rating. The Predator films are usually defined by intensity, brutality, and the visceral reality of the hunt. So seeing that toned down rating had me worried. But honestly? The action sequences are fantastic. The pacing is sharp, the set pieces are cinematic, and the film still carries the weight and tension of a Predator story without needing to lean into gore just for shock value.
One of the most interesting parts of this entry is the look into Yautja culture. Getting to see the tribe dynamics, the rites of proving oneself, and the nuanced hierarchy was genuinely refreshing. Dek and Kwei’s relationship had real emotional grounding—though I do wish we’d been given a clearer understanding of how Dek saved him originally. A touch more depth there would have pushed the emotional arc from solid to truly great. Still, it’s enough to give the story purpose and momentum.
The Kalisk homeworld is a standout. The environment feels hostile, gorgeous, and alive—exactly the kind of setting where a predator is both hunter and hunted. Dek’s mantra of “you quit too early” (directed at Thea) becomes a thematic backbone rather than just a throwaway line, and it lands surprisingly well.
The Weyland name drops were a fun nod without being heavy-handed. And the mysterious “Mu-th/R” (or however we’re spelling it) is the kind of breadcrumb that lets the universe expand without forcing it. We also don’t get Aliens yet (although we see the ship from Prometheus)— and I actually appreciate that restraint. Let the world build. Let the tension grow.
And I have to mention Elle Fanning playing both Thea and Tessa. The contrast is sharp, intentional, and she absolutely nails both roles. It’s one of the film’s most subtle and yet impressive choices.
Predator: Badlands isn’t just “good for PG-13.”
It’s simply good.
