– Strong Cast, Creeping Tension, and a Flat Finish
Leave the World Behind is one of those films that sits right on the edge of being great—but just doesn’t quite get there. That said, there’s still a lot going for it, and even though I’d call it just okay overall, I found plenty to appreciate.
First and foremost, the cast is phenomenal. Every performance is dialed in, and you can tell each actor fully committed to their role. They bring a lot of weight and nuance to the story, and honestly, I don’t think the film would have held up as well as it does without them. If you’re someone who enjoys watching great acting carry a movie, this cast delivers.
The story itself is compelling. There’s an ongoing sense of unease that keeps you engaged throughout—it’s suspenseful without being exhausting. You’re seated just enough on the edge of your seat to stay curious, but not so far forward that you’re white-knuckling it the entire time. The pacing works, and the slow reveal of information is well executed.
Some of the specific “what’s-going-wrong” moments are especially creative. The self-driving car pile-up? Wild. The illness that causes people to lose all their teeth? Creepy in the best way. And the sheets of paper falling from the sky with Arabic writing on them? A striking image that really stuck with me. These little elements added an eerie layer to the story that helped make the world feel just off enough to be unsettling.
Where the film stumbles, unfortunately, is in the ending. It’s not terrible, but it is underwhelming. After all the buildup, it just kind of…ends. It doesn’t ruin the whole experience, but it definitely takes some of the wind out of the sails. You’re left wondering if there wasn’t a better, more impactful way to close it all out.
All in all, Leave the World Behind is a decent watch—thoughtful, eerie, and anchored by a stand out cast. Just don’t expect it to stick the landing.
