Klaus is an incredible, heartfelt, and refreshingly unique take on the origin of Santa Claus. In a sea of Netflix content—much of it just okay (or worse)—this film is a standout gem. I’ll admit, I didn’t have high hopes when it was announced, but it far exceeded my expectations. In fact, I absolutely love this movie and can’t recommend it enough.
Jesper (Jason Schwartzman) is a spoiled, entitled young man sent to a remote island to serve as the town’s postman—a punishment meant to teach him a lesson. At first, Jesper clings to his lazy ways, but two people inspire him to change: Alva (Rashida Jones), a local schoolteacher, and Klaus (J.K. Simmons), a reclusive toymaker with a heartbreaking past.
What starts as a transactional exchange—letters for toys—evolves into something magical. Jesper begins delivering toys to the island’s children, spreading joy and transforming an otherwise cold and gray town. The film masterfully unfolds the story of Klaus, showing a man deeply shaped by life’s hardships but still capable of rekindling his kindness and spirit.
The animation has a distinctive feel that makes it special, the voice acting is brilliant, and the theme song, Invisible, deserves a spot on every Christmas playlist.
Klaus is a true holiday treasure, a movie that brings warmth, joy, and a sense of wonder. If you haven’t seen it, you’re missing out on one of the best Christmas films in recent years.
