Hotel Transylvania (2012) 😊

Hotel Transylvania is easy to like. It’s bright, silly, and stuffed with monsters having a blast, and it asks almost nothing of you.

Dracula runs a luxury resort where monsters can relax, safe from pitchfork-waving humans. Then a goofy backpacker named Jonathan wanders in just as Drac’s daughter Mavis turns 118. Drac panics and disguises him as a monster. Mavis falls for him on the spot. You can guess the rest.

The big surprise is Adam Sandler. I know his voice wears thin for plenty of people, but he’s great here. His Dracula is funny, theatrical, and a sweet, smothering dad. Selena Gomez gives Mavis the wide-eyed buzz of a kid who’s never been allowed out of the house. Steve Buscemi steals every scene as Wayne, a worn-out werewolf buried in pups. I wanted more of him.

Genndy Tartakovsky’s animation does the heavy lifting. Everything is colorful and bouncy, and the characters stretch and snap like old Looney Tunes. The hotel looks like a place you’d actually book.

The story is the weak spot. It’s the classic “parent learns to let go” plot, with few surprises. Some jokes land, others try too hard, and the middle sags. It feels more like a long cartoon episode than another Monsters, Inc.

Still, Drac and Mavis have real heart together. Their scenes stuck with me, and they carry the whole thing.

It’s not one to rush out for. But come October, it’s a cozy, cheerful pick the whole family can agree on.
