Ford v Ferrari is the kind of movie Hollywood barely makes anymore, and I loved every minute of it.
On paper, it’s one car company trying to beat another. That shouldn’t carry two and a half hours. It does, easily, because the real story is two guys who are brilliant at their jobs and a pack of suits who keep getting in the way.
Christian Bale is incredible as Ken Miles: cranky, stubborn, and physically incapable of keeping his mouth shut. You root for him anyway. Matt Damon plays Carroll Shelby quieter, and it works. One look says everything. Together they feel like real friends, the kind who brawl on the front lawn and then split a cold drink like nothing happened.
Josh Lucas will make you want to throw something at the screen. Caitriona Balfe turns Mollie Miles into far more than “the wife at home.”
Then there’s the racing. No shaky cam. No confusing cuts. You always know where the cars are and what’s at stake. By Le Mans, I was gripping my armrest. If you liked Rush, this scratches the same itch, maybe better.
Still, my favorite moment isn’t the big race. It’s Miles taking the finished GT40 out for the first time, a huge, unguarded smile spreading across his face. He’s spent his life being told he’s too difficult. For a few seconds, he just gets to be great at the thing he loves. I got a lump in my throat.
Sure, it hits familiar sports-movie beats and smooths over some history. I didn’t care.
Funny, tense, and full of heart. Find the biggest screen and the loudest speakers you can, and let it rip.
