Easy A (2010)

Easy A (2010) 🤩

Easy A is the movie that made me a lifelong Emma Stone fan. I expected a cute teen comedy. I walked out floored.

The setup is simple. Olive Penderghast tells one tiny lie about losing her virginity, and by lunch the whole school knows. Instead of fighting the rumor, she owns it. Soon she’s helping other kids fake their own scandals, and things spiral fast.

Stone carries the whole thing. She’s sharp, quick and hilarious, but she also lets you see the hurt when the jokes stop working. Her timing makes even throwaway lines land. Then there’s the weekend she spends belting “Pocket Full of Sunshine.” I still can’t hear that song without laughing.

The supporting cast is stacked. Stanley Tucci and Patricia Clarkson are the coolest parents in movie history: weird, warm and always in her corner. Amanda Bynes is a riot as preachy Marianne. Thomas Haden Church is the teacher everyone wishes they’d had. Dan Byrd’s Brandon hits harder than you’d expect.

My favorite touch is Olive talking straight to us through a webcam. Early on she grumbles that real life never plays out like a John Hughes movie. Then the ending hands her exactly that kind of moment, and it feels earned.

Is the middle a little slow? Maybe. Is the ending a bit tidy? Sure. And I absolutely loved it.

If you love Mean Girls or Clueless, this belongs right next to them. It’s funny and smart, with a big heart under all the wisecracks. Watch it, then watch it again.
