I came to this backwards. Saw Companion and the new Resident Evil first, loved both, and figured I should finally check the one everyone kept pointing me toward. No disappointment here.
The tension is the first thing that hits you. Zach Cregger builds dread the same way across his films, but here he rips out the release valve. No humor. Not even the dark kind modern horror usually leans on. You just sit there with your shoulders up around your ears.
The structure is the other trick. It jumps between timeframes and hands the story to different characters, so you keep getting new angles on things you thought you had figured out. That kind of move can turn smug fast. Here it works, because every shift makes the situation worse instead of just cleverer.
Closest comparison I can make is Us, and I’ll say it plainly: I like this one more. Tighter pacing, better set pieces, and a score that stays unsettling without climbing on top of the movie and demanding your attention.
The cast is excellent across the board, which matters because the script has no interest in deep character histories. That’s not a flaw. It’s the design. You’re moving too fast to sit there doing math about how these people ended up in this house. You’re just hanging on.
If you need horror that explains itself, or you want a laugh every ten minutes to bleed off the pressure, look elsewhere. This is a rollercoaster with no safety bar, and it knows exactly what it’s doing to you. Cregger is a master of this genre and I want everything he makes next.
One of the best horror films in years. Go in knowing as little as possible.
